Why is this a good smoothie for young athletes?

Young athletes have increased nutritional demands because they need to support everyday growth and development as well as their training and sport.

This smoothie provides two particularly useful macronutrients for active teenagers: protein and carbohydrates.

Protein provides amino acids required for the growth and repair of body tissues, including muscle. Carbohydrates provide an important source of energy for exercising muscles and help replenish glycogen stores following exercise.

The banana also provides carbohydrate and potassium, while milk contributes additional protein, carbohydrate, calcium and other nutrients.

That makes this much more than simply a protein shake.

Is this a good post-workout smoothie for teenagers?

Yes. Post-training is probably our favourite time for this smoothie.

After a hard football match, gym session, athletics training or other sport, the combination of protein and carbohydrates makes it a convenient recovery option.

The ~31g protein helps provide the building blocks required for muscle repair and growth, while the ~38g carbohydrate helps replace some of the energy used during exercise.

It's also quick to make, which is particularly useful when a young athlete gets home from training hungry and needs something substantial before their next meal.

Can young athletes have this smoothie before training?

It can also be used as a pre-training smoothie, particularly when there is enough time for digestion.

As a general practical option, we'd aim to have it approximately 1.5–2 hours before training rather than immediately before an intense session.

Because everyone tolerates food differently before exercise, young athletes should work out what timing and portion size feels comfortable for them.

If training or a match is starting very soon, a smaller, easily digested carbohydrate-rich snack may be more appropriate.

Is a protein smoothie only for after sport?

No.

Protein isn't something young athletes only need immediately after exercise. Their overall protein intake across the entire day matters.

This chocolate banana smoothie can therefore also work as a high-protein breakfast, afternoon snack or convenient option on busy school and sport days.

Food should form the foundation of a young athlete's diet, but a simple protein smoothie can provide a convenient option when schedules make eating well more difficult.
